This handmade Moroccan leather pouf is cut, embroidered, and stitched by hand in Marrakech using goatskin tanned in the traditional pits of the old city. The radiating star pattern on the top panel is stitched thread by thread, not printed or pressed. It takes an artisan the better part of a day to complete one.

Why It Ships Empty
A filled pouf is mostly air and volume. Shipping one internationally would cost more than the pouf itself and would triple the carbon footprint of the delivery. Every Moroccan pouf sold outside Morocco — including those from major retailers — ships flat and unfilled for the same reason.

Filling takes about twenty minutes and requires no tools.

How to Fill It
The pouf has a zippered or drawstring opening on the underside. Common fillings, in order of how most people use them:

Fabric scraps and old clothing — free, firm, and the traditional Moroccan method. Old t-shirts, towels, and bedsheets work well. You will need roughly 4–5 kg of material. Pack tightly and evenly, pushing filling into the corners first.

Polyester fiberfill — available at any craft store, lighter and softer. You will need approximately 2–3 kg. Gives a plusher, more forgiving seat.

Shredded foam — the firmest option and the best if you plan to sit on it daily rather than use it as a footrest. Around 3 kg.

Do not use loose beads or beanbag pellets. They compress unevenly and leak through the stitching over time.

Fill it fuller than feels right at first. The leather stretches slightly in the first weeks, and an underfilled pouf sags into a shapeless disc.

Uses
As a footstool in front of an armchair. As low seating in a living room, where it works better than a stool because it has no hard edges. As a child’s seat. As a side table with a tray on top. In a bedroom at the foot of the bed for shoes and folded clothes.

The leather is thick enough to take daily use from adults without stretching out of shape.

Care Instructions
Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not soak, and do not machine wash — water will stiffen the hide and can pull the stitching.

Condition with a neutral leather balm once or twice a year to keep the surface supple. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades dyed leather over time.

If the pouf softens or sags after a year or two of use, unzip it and add more filling rather than replacing it.

Natural Variation
Each pouf is dyed and finished by hand, so color varies between pieces and even across a single pouf. The traditional Moroccan dyes used here produce depth rather than uniformity — slight tonal shifts across panels are characteristic of the process, not a defect.

The leather may have a distinct smell when it arrives. This is the vegetable tanning and it fades within a few weeks of airing.
