This handmade Moroccan ceramic trinket dish is thrown on a wheel and painted entirely by hand in Fez, the city that has produced Morocco’s finest pottery for over a thousand years. Every line in the pattern was drawn by a person holding a brush, which is why no two dishes are identical.

Fez Pottery

The clay comes from the hills outside Fez, where the local deposits have been quarried for ceramics since the medieval period. It is thrown, dried, fired, glazed, and fired again — four separate stages, each requiring the piece to be handled individually.

The painting happens between firings, applied to the raw glaze with a fine brush. The pigment sinks into the glaze during the second firing rather than sitting on top of it, which is why the pattern will not scratch off or fade with washing.

The Pattern

The geometric designs draw from the same visual language as zellige tilework — the interlocking stars, radiating petals, and eight-fold symmetry found in the mosaics of Fez madrasas and riads. The patterns are not decorative accidents. They follow strict geometric rules developed over centuries of Islamic craft tradition, where infinite repeating pattern stands in for infinity itself.

Care Instructions

Hand wash with warm water and mild soap. The glaze is durable, but repeated dishwasher cycles will dull the surface over years and can chip the rim where pieces knock together.

Do not use in a microwave or oven — these pieces are fired for decorative and table use, not for heat.

Avoid abrasive scouring pads. A soft sponge removes everything the glaze will let stick.

Natural Variation

Because each dish is painted freehand, expect variation in line weight, color saturation, and the exact placement of the pattern. Small dark specks in the glaze are iron traces from the local clay and are characteristic of Fez pottery rather than a fault.

Slight differences in diameter and rim shape are normal in wheel-thrown work. Pieces are not identical because they were not made by a machine.
