Handmade Moroccan Leather Backpack — Vintage Rucksack from Fez

This handmade Moroccan leather backpack is built the way rucksacks were built before nylon: one piece of full-grain hide, stitched by hand, closed with a buckle instead of a zipper. It is made in a small workshop in Fez by artisans who learned the trade from their fathers, and it is designed to outlast every backpack you have owned.

Full-Grain Vegetable-Tanned Leather

The hide is full-grain and vegetable-tanned — cured slowly with bark extracts rather than chemical baths. Full-grain means the outer surface of the skin is left intact rather than sanded down, so the leather keeps its natural strength and grain pattern. It is the toughest part of the hide and the reason this bag will not tear at the stress points.

The leather is left unlined and untreated beyond its tanning. It starts stiff. Within a month of daily carry it softens, and within a year it has darkened several shades and taken on a patina that no factory finish can imitate.

Hand-Stitched Construction

Every seam is saddle-stitched by hand with waxed thread. Machine stitching uses a single thread that unravels along the whole seam if one loop breaks. Hand saddle-stitching uses two threads locked in opposite directions — if one breaks, the seam holds.

This is why the bag costs more and why it lasts decades rather than seasons.

Practical Layout

The main compartment closes with a drawstring underneath a rounded flap, secured by an antique brass buckle. The drawstring keeps contents from spilling; the flap keeps rain off. Together they are more secure than a zipper and cannot jam.

Two front pockets, each with its own flap and buckle, hold a phone, keys, wallet, or a small notebook without you needing to open the main compartment.

The shoulder straps are adjustable leather, wide enough to distribute weight across the shoulder rather than cutting into it. There is a leather grab handle at the top.

Inside there is room for a 13-inch laptop, a book, a jacket, and a water bottle — enough for a day of work, class, or travel.

Care Instructions

Wipe with a dry cloth after use. Condition with a neutral leather balm every three to four months, more often in dry climates. If the bag gets soaked, let it dry at room temperature away from radiators or direct sun — heat will stiffen the hide permanently.

Scratches are normal and usually fade on their own as the leather’s oils redistribute. Deeper marks can be rubbed gently with a soft cloth.

Do not overload beyond its capacity; the stitching is strong but the hide will stretch at the strap anchors under sustained heavy weight.
